Cloudy with a chance of SaaS

cloudy with SaaS This morning I’m looking out my window at the clouds and wondering if spring is really here or mother nature is teasing me.  As I turn back to my computer I start thinking about what applications I use everyday for my business and personal life.  From my email to this blog to my collaboration tools to my expense reporting, everything is in the cloud.

A recent survey by Gartner concluded that more than 95% of organizations expect to maintain or increase their use of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).  This should come as no surprise, but it’s good to see research data to back up what many already know.  Almost half of the survey respondents said they have been using SaaS in their businesses for more than three years.

How to explain a data breach to your boss

breach notificationNew data breach notification laws are hitting the books in the US and elsewhere very quickly.  Mississippi is the 46th state in the  United States to enact such a law.  These laws should help consumers retain their privacy and institute more transparency into corporate governance.

Today the question is not “What do you do if you have a data breach?”  It’s more “What do you do WHEN?”

Many experts will tell you that it depends, but the laws are clear.  You must notify affected parties immediately or within a reasonable time period, such as 30 or 45 days.  But how you handle things internally is left up to you.  Gone are the days when you can stick your head in the sand and hope everything fixes itself or goes away.  As an employee, officer or board member of an organization, you have a legal and fiduciary responsibility to:

1. Notify

2. Assess

3. Fix.

Insights walking the floor at AIIM 2010

AIIM 2010While walking the floor at AIIM 2010 in Philadelphia, I got some impressions of what vendors think customers want.  Of course the question is “Do customers really want that?”  There wasn’t any one dominant theme, but securely managing documents was evident in many places; scanning paper in, routing it through business rules and storing it securely were the norm.  I also heard a lot about focusing on the user, rather than what’s the ROI and how to implement this thing.  Last year’s event was focused more on ROI because of the economy; there was also quite a bit of gloom and doom, which was understandable.  Even though traffic was somewhat sparse at times this year, the mood was upbeat and people were looking to spend money to solve problems.

eDocument Sciences exhibits at AIIM 2010

eDocument Sciences and Onehub joined Fasoo.com in a booth at AIIM 2010 in Philadelphia.  This is the 3rd year that we joined Fasoo in its booth.  The three companies were talking to customers about Enterprise Digital Rights Management and SaaS-based collaboration.  Fasoo and Onehub showed an on-demand Enterprise DRM service that got a lot of interest from customers.  The service will let customers of all sizes encrypt documents and securely transfer them.  The document creator can control who can access the document, what they can do with it and for how long.

After a hard day at the booth, we all did get to unwind in The City of Brotherly Love.  I think the best part of these events is getting to know your partners and customers while relaxing.  We are definitely going to do this again next year.
